Officials say a wildfire that is burning near the South Carolina coast has caused more than $8 million in damage.

On April 24th, county officials released an early estimate of nearly $8.3 million dollars from the wildfire that has burned 80 square kilometres near one of the state's busiest tourist areas.

Flames have destroyed 70 homes and damaged about 100.

So far no injuries have been reported.

Officials say some of the more than 2,000 people evacuated because of the fire were being allowed to return to their homes, or what remains of them.
