Finance Minister Greg Selinger says the government has introduced amendments to the Mortgage Dealers Act which he says will broaden protection for consumers.
He says under the changes, mortgage brokers would be licensed and would have to say if they were receiving fees or commissions for referrals.
Selinger says brokers who have recommended inappropriate mortgages to borrowers in the United States have caused financial and emotional harm to consumers.
The provincial government is also introducing amendments to the Securities Act that would better protect investors, boosting compensation for financial losses from $100,000 to $250,000.
Selinger says such provisions provide investors with a no-cost alternative to going to court.
