Darrell Dexter, leader of the Nova Scotia NDP says an NDP government would scrap the province’s $2,500 cap on minor injuries from motor vehicle accidents in favour of a deductible.

Dexter says the long-held party policy would help get rid of the kinds of minor injury claims the insurance industry has identified as a problem.

He says the NDP would set an amount that would be deducted from any personal injury claims, in consultation with the industry.

Dexter says that amount could be in the range of $10,000 to $15,000.

He says the current cap creates undue hardships because it catches serious injuries and not just the so called soft tissue injuries.

Nova Scotia's cap was put in place in 2003 after insurance companies said they were struggling and premiums for motorists were skyrocketing.

Nova Scotians go to polls for the Provincial General Election on June 9.
