Quebec Health Minister Yves Bolduc has tabled legislation that would allow the province to sue tobacco companies to recover health costs.
Bolduc has not elaborated on the strategy for such lawsuits but says the province would seek millions of dollars in any legal action.
He says it is too early to say if Quebec will form a common front with other provinces in the effort.
Quebec is the latest province to take on the tobacco companies.
Earlier this month Alberta became the eighth province to table legislation to ease medicare cost recovery lawsuits against the tobacco industry.
Ontario also brought in a bill in March and British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba already have laws on the books.
